Loads of Change picking up speed

Today's Loads of Change helped 22 people and their families. We ran 105 loads in the washers and dryers at the cost of $290 (thanks to a few people who donated a total of $50). Special thanks to Lions Carol Ryan and Terry Blais, as well as Lion Dennis Tesch, who gave us an hour of his time! Our next laundry day is Oct. 18.

Poulsbo princess joins zone chair for meeting

Annual birthday calendar goes on sale

Our club has been doing this calendar for decades! It features local advertisers - many of whom give away goodies you can gather the week of your birthday or anniversary. Also, there's a local photo featured and tear-off months with plenty of room to write. There are even fire safety tips! Contact a Lion, or leave a message here if you're interested in purchase a calendar for $8 each. You get up to 5 free listings for your family, and the calendar will be available in November.

70 more children have vision screened

The vision of 70 children at Martha & Mary in Silverdale was screened Wednesday by Lions Karen Reitan, Pauline Ostheller, Sherri Burch and Steve Calhoun. 19 referrals were made.

Kingston High Leos hold successful blood drive

Kingston High School LEOs held their spring blood drive March 19. The LEOs signed up over 50 donors and collected 40+ units of blood. The blood drive was considered a success by all parties involved (school officials, the blood bank people, and the kids).

Firehouse Garden planting is underway

Our Firehouse Garden has been rototilled and a few more veggies are in the ground! Thanks to Eric Blais for rototilling and to Lions Rob Ratcliff and Terry Blais for planting seeds Sunday morning. There has been a work party one weekend day for the past few weeks. Come Sunday at 10 am to help!

 

Eric Blais is not a Poulsbo Lion, though he is married to one. He spent 1-1/2 hours rototilling over the same ground at varying depths.

 

This raised bed has hay over the soil, then fabric and has also been covered to raise the soil temperature so we can plant. It worked! This bed has peas and radishes in it.

The newly rototilled area where be where pumpkins and corn will be planted. We'll be able to grow so much more produce!

Free fishing derby announced

 

Thanks to Lion Karl Ostheller for creating this flyer for our annual Hooked on Fish fishing derby next to Poulsbo Middle School. This event is lots of fun AND there will be donuts and beverages to purchase from our Leos.

Poulsbo Garden Club gives us grant for Firehouse Garden

 

Poulsbo Garden Club grants awarded: This year the Poulsbo Garden Club gave 8 organizations grants ranging from $200 to $500 for their gardening projects (for a total of $3,300). Organizations receiving grants were Raab Park Youth Garden, Martha and Mary Therapeutic Gardens, Poulsbo Lions/Fire Department P-Patch, Sons of Norway, Raab Park P-Patch, NK Fishline P-Patch, Fish Park and Kingston Village Green Demonstration Gardens. Over the last 10 years the Poulsbo Garden Club has gifted over $34,000 to local organizations for their gardening projects.

Money raised for the grants comes from the club's annual plant sale. So mark your calendar for the 2019 Plant Sale on the first Saturday in May: May 4, from 9 am to 2 pm at 19801 Viking Ave in Poulsbo (old James Lumber site), rain or shine!!! Many unique plants from members' gardens as well as annuals, perennials, veggie starts, bushes, bulbs, garden art and more will be offered at very reasonable prices.

High school and middle school Leos join for two projects

8 North Kitsap High Leos visited 35 Poulsbo Middle School Leos March 11 to do some joint projects like sorting eyeglasses and packaging dental kits.

Raised beds covered to increase soil temps

 

Hoops and plastic went on a couple of raised beds today at the Firehouse Garden to warm up the soil so we can get more veggies planted. Helping out were Lions Rick Wright, Noon President Steve Calhoun and Rob Ratcliff of the Evening Pride Branch (pictured), along with Terry Blais and EP Branch President Joyce Smith.

Lions help set up where pilot house will go at Maritime Museum

For February 2019, 220 Poulsbo Lions volunteered 882 hours and served 25,561 people.

Montessori kids screened

Our Poulsbo Lions vision screening group was in Kingston this morning at a Montessori school where Lion President Steve Calhoun and fellow Lions Karen Reitan, Candy Peters and Carol Ryan screened the eyesight of 14 children, making 3 referrals.

Pick a Poulsbo club - Evening Pride Branch Club meets at 7 pm the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month in the Gallagher Building at St. Olaf's on Caldart Avenue. Poulsbo Noon Club meets at 12 every Thursday in the Social Hall at First Lutheran Church on 4th Avenue. You're invited!!!! We do great things in the community.

Blackberry roots cleared from Firehouse Garden

 

Poulsbo Lions Rob Ratcliff (Evening Pride Branch Club) and Terry Blais (Noon Club), along with Terry's daughter, Sylvie, spent 1-1/2 hours this morning digging out blackberry roots and cleaning up the community garden. Next Sunday, the ground will be rototilled and raked. If the soil is warmer, we'll plant peas!
