Poulsbo Lions donate $1,000 toward local narcotics dog

 

Poulsbo Lions presented a $1,000 check to Poulsbo Officer Nick Hoke and Chief Al Townsend for the police department's narcotics dog on November 25. On hand were (left to right): Lions Sherri Burch, JanetMarie Valiga, Lynnea Heerman and Mayor Becky Erickson, as well as King Lion Pat Burch. The funds were raised at our September Fall Fling Dinner Auction.

NKHS LEOs host successful blood drive

The North Kitsap LEOs hosted a successful blood drive Oct. 31. Poulsbo Lion Joe Stenstrom and President Pat Burch (back row) were there, as were LEOs (left to right): Emily Shane, Darby Lowney (Leo president), Anna Rutledge, and Emily Jachinowicz. Not pictured (though there) was Nick Shipley.  

Poulsbo hosts Albanian Supreme Court justices

Members of Albania's Supreme Court visited Poulsbo for a special dinner on October 12. At the dinner was Poulsbo Mayor Becky Erickson (fifth from left) and Lion Roger Sherrard (fifth from right), who's traveled regularly over the years to guide the Albanian.

Lions give free eye exams at Operation Day of Hope

Lions conducted free eye exams at the Gateway Fellowship Operation Day of Hope October 19. Of the 89 people screened, 53 were discovered to have a medical need. 

In the photo above, Lion Lynnea's grandson - Mitchell Johnson - brought two 5-year-old boys to have their eyes tested. Mitchell also had his eyes examined and found he had a
new eye medical need. Lion Mike Alvarado of the Evening Pride Branch sits facing.

Hundreds of people received free clothes, food, legal services, dental services (such as x-rays and cleaning), a hot lunch, haircuts, and crafts at the event. Brochures were handed out regarding safety, WIC, and other services, as well.

Smarsh wins 2013 cruise raffle drawing

Ann Smarsh of Renton is the lucky winner of the 10-day cruise for two to anywhere Holland American Lines sails. The Poulsbo Lions Evening Pride Branch drawing took place Oct. 17.

Smarsh is a Lion and Past International Director of Lions Clubs International. She and her husband, Tom, recently moved to the Pacific Northwest.

The 6th Annual Cruise Raffle brings nearly $3,000 to the Lions Club to support many projects, including: Dictionaries for all third-grade students in North Kitsap, Preventive Care Vision Screening, a community service scholarship for Miss West Sound contestants, and appreciation for first responders in NK.

Many thanks to our community and our Lions family for supporting our efforts.

Enjoying Steak Night

It's good food and good fun every October when the Poulsbo Lions have their Steak Night. Every Lion who sold more than 20 community calendars gets the meal for FREE! Nobody goes home hungry because the steaks are huge, along with baked potatoes and green salad.

Working on the Horticulture Building at NK High

Poulsbo Lions joined forces with some North Kitsap High students - including some Future Farmers of America - October 5 at the Horticulture Building on Hostmark Street, just up the road from the high school. Lions auction raises $3,400 for Retsil veterans home

Fischer named Lion of the Quarter

 

Poulsbo Lion Tamara Fischer received the Lion of the Quarter plaque from President Pat Burch at the October 10 meeting.

Poulsbo Lions Fall Fling a huge success

Poulsbo Lions brought in more than $30,000 at its first ever Fall Fling dinner/auction at the Sons of Norway Marine Room. The club sold 131 tickets, including one at the door. Everyone was given a complimentary beverage coupon.

Lion Ryan Smart was the master of ceremonies, and President Pat Burch welcomed guests. The big ticket item of the evening was a 1978 Mercedes 450CL donated by Lion Warren Tytler, which sold for $3,300.

The $30,000 includes ticket sales and paddle donations for Poulsbo Elementary's computer lab ($4,000) and the Retsil Veterans Home ($3,400).

Lion Dennis Peters chaired the event, with 54 Lions contributing many hours gathering auction items, creating the auction brochure and descriptive cards, decorating, computer entries, etc. The Fall Fling committee was made up of: Lions Ginger Shields, Steve Swann, Matt Alvarado, Ryan Smart, Pat Burch, and Dottie Ridgeway.

There were some rather large pieces of debris on Highway 3, including an Adopt a Highway sign. Our club will picker up litter once a quarter to help keep our highways clean.

Lions screen kids at Touch a Truck event August 17

Poulsbo Lions were able to use the Sight and Hearing Screen Unit van at the Touch a Truck event August 17 in the Poulsbo Village Shopping Center. More than 70 free screenings were conducted. Photos of the event have been provided by Lion Lynnea Herrman.

Three new Melvin Jones Fellows named at banquet

 

Our Poulsbo Lions are richer with three new Melvin Jones award recipients - (left) Mike Alvarado with son, Lion Matt Alvarado, above. Matt received the Martin G. Anderson Lion of the Year award that same evening for his work as membership chair and his can-do attitude.

President Ginger also recognized Lion Doug Mong for a Spirit Award. Doug's sister, Lion Beth Olsen, accepted the award on his behalf because Doug was in the hospital.

Stenstrom named Lion of the Quarter 2013

 

Outgoing King Lion Ginger Shields named Lion Joe Stenstrom her Lion of the Quarter for April-June 2013, as well as Rookie of the Year at the recent installation banquet at the Clearwater Casino.

Lions give scholarships to NK High students

Proceeds from our club's Viking Fest Pancake Breakfast and the Raab Foundation provided 11 scholarships. Seven went to graduating seniors and four went to college students. Above, Lion Matt Alvarado announces the North Kitsap High School scholarship recipients June 5 while Lion Joyce Smith looks on.

 

 

The scholarships were each in the amount of $1,000 for Lion Joe Stenstrom (Olympic College), and graduating NK seniors Brittany Brown, Lydia Leach, and Alissa Neuman. $500 scholarships were given to NK seniors Mencius Leonard and Arory Milyard, and to Kingston High seniors Korina Waring-Enriquez and Sonja Redbird, as well as April McCabe (Western Washington University), Walker McCabe (Whatcom Community College), and Lion Sebastian Ford (St. Olaf's).
