April is a busy month for eyes

 Seventeen people from 18-month-old and 5-year-old boys, to middle schoolers and adults took advantage of free vision screening this afternoon at the Poulsbo Library.

Free vision screening will next take place April 14 from 9-11 a.m. at The Gateway Preschool (40 students).

A small group of Lions will do screening on April 28 at 10 a.m. at Silverdale Lutheran Church.

April wraps up with a 10-1 p.m. screening on April 29, again at Silverdale Lutheran.

3+ tons of food, $2,465 raised for food bank

Two sisters were delighted to add a spice as their food bank contribution at Safeway March 27.

 

It was a well-spent two days March 27 and 28 at area grocery stores to help fill up the food bank's shelves. The results: This past weekend the Poulsbo Lions Club & Poulsbo Rotary citywide food drive collected 6,408 lbs of food and $2,465 for Fishline. That's both more food and money than we collected last year, which was the first year. We had 37 Lions helping out, for approximately 120 hours. Special mention goes to Lion Linda Schwind for pulling 4 shifts! It's GRrrrreat to be a Lion!

We're Winners!

Poulsbo Lions Club was well represented at the 2015 District 19C Contest and Awards at Spring Convention in Tacoma March 14.

The best news first - we placed first for our club brochure (Karl Ostheller), our scrapbook (Terry Blais), and our action photo of Dave Risley screening a preschooler's vision (Dottie Ridgeway).
 

New member Ken Rury placed second for his Achievement Speech, and this website (Terry Blais) got 3rd place behind Gig Harbor and Puyallup.

"Congratulations to all clubs with contest entries. With “Skin in the Game" participants have more fun, strive to do their best and

cheer each other on. New this year, the Action Photo contest attracted the most clubs participating! The smaller clubs competed toe to toe with the larger clubs sometimes with only 1 point separating the standings. Thanks to my focused and thoughtful committee:

I have a voice

I spoke briefly at the LIONS MD19 Zone C-4 District Meeting last Thursday about my effort to provide social media to charities and those being charitable in the community by writing about them everyday this year to direct traffic to their websites. That blog is called Kitsap Cares about Charity 365. I also provide a dozen positive community Facebook pages for nonprofits to have a voice. I have spoken to over 600 people this year in person and over 200,000 people online every week.

 

This coming March 13-14th is the 67th LIONS District 19 Convention in Tacoma and I have to give a 5 minute speech on what the Poulsbo LIONS has done this past year in regard to service for the community. I am getting over a cold and have no voice and I woke up thinking what if I don't have a VOICE on Friday. But I fought back that fear as what I have to say is too important, I have to have a VOICE!

I thought about how even without a physical voice, on the internet I have a voice that can speak loud and clear. I can speak for those that can't, those that are hidden in the shadows, those that lost their way and need our help.

I thought about the speech Helen Keller gave at the 1925 LIONS convention in Chicago that gave the LIONS the mandate to be "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness". Helen Keller always had a voice she just had to figure out how to get it out. She could have given up being deaf and dumb as they said in those days. I thought if Helen Keller can speak, than nothing should stop me. I would rather record my computer speaking my speech or my Smartphone reading it at the conference then to let something like losing my voice keep me from having a VOICE. Don't let obstacles get in your way of what you have to say. It didn't stop Helen Keller.

Just another fabulous week as a Poulsbo Lion. Here's what that means:

Poulsbo Lions screened the vision of more than 40 preschoolers at Martha & Mary Tuesday.

We are providing funds for an iPad for a blind student in the NK School District.

We are giving $500 to two NK High Debate students who qualified for national championships in Nebraska in May. This is the first time in 20 years our students have qualified!

And coming up - more fabulousness:

We're cleaning up up the Highway 305 interchanges Monday, March 16, through the Adopt-a-Highway program.

We are helping with the city Easter Egg Hunt at Raab Park, Caldart Avenue, on Saturday, April 4.

We're providing materials and labor for a stairway at Fish Park in early April.

We are hosting another FREE Open Swim on Saturday, April 11, at the NK Pool from noon to 2 p.m.

And we're hosting a FREE fishing derby for students 7-1 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at the NK Horticulture Pond, with donations taken for doughnuts, hot chocolate and coffee.

It's GREEEEAT being a Poulsbo Lion. If you want to join us, you're invited to a noon lunch meeting Thursdays at the Social Hall at First Lutheran Church on 4th Avenue, Poulsbo.

Great reasons to attend spring conference

Dear Poulsbo Noon Lions,

 

You have great reasons to attend the Spring MD-19 District Convention on March 13 and 14 - our club will pay your $8 registration fee (and you need to register by March 7), and take care of your $22 lunch tab on Saturday, which is when the awards will be announced.

 

Lion Karl Ostheller has been making sure our club is entered in many categories, so you won't want to miss out!

 

The convention will be held at the La Quinta Inn & Suites in Tacoma. Hope to see you there!

Open swim our club hosts brings in at least 40

 

Our first free open swim today was a HUGE success - 40 happy swimmers enjoying the water. Lifeguards report "far more" use of the pool today compared to an average Saturday open swim period. A big BRAVO ZULU to Lion Dick Prine for heading up this project.

 

 

Our club hosted the swim from 12-2 p.m. Saturday, February 21, for $200. At least two more events may be forthcoming.

Don swimsuits for free swim Saturday

 

This is just a reminder to let your friends and family know our club is offering a FREE community swim from 12-2 p.m. Saturday, February 21, at the North Kitsap Pool on Hostmark Street. If there's a good turnout, our club is prepared to offer a couple more free swims in the future!

Lions return with handful of awards from curling

 

Ten Poulsbo Lions made the journey to British Columbia for a weekend of curling Feb. 13-15. Our Lions have made the trek for 13 years in a row, receiving the traveling trophy this year. Herb Armstrong received a special wooden crutch-type award so he can pee standing up (you'd have to see it and hear the poem to understand). High-scoring teams were the Burches (Pat and Sherri) and the Prines (Dick and Linda). Others attending were Joyce Smith and her friend, Elda Armstrong, and Scott and Bev Puhn.

Trying to get a good photo of our Lions club is like... well, herding cats! Here's our first try at taking a Poulsbo Noon Lions Club photo. You can see we tried to represent many of the activities we do - pancake breakfast, flag set-up and take-down on holidays, White Canes, highway litter clean-up, and more with a variety of props.

 

We'll share the latest group photo, taken by Lion Dottie Ridgeway last Thursday, soon!

Vision screening for preschoolers

The Poulsbo Lions are doing vision screening for all of the kids in Martha and Marys' preschool programs. Thursday, January 27, we were at the Early Learning Center in Silverdale, WA.

Lions and NK High Leos put together 360 kits

 

Poulsbo Lions and North Kitsap High School Leos came together January 22 at 3 p.m. to assemble 360 hygiene kits in the NKHS Commons. The kits include shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, comb, disposable razor and soap. Above, President Dennis Peters and Lion Pauline Ostheller place stickers on the baggies saying the kits are compliments of "your local Lions club."

Many hands make for light work. It took everybody approximately 30 minutes to put together all of the kits.

Lion Clubs in our zone had been collecting donated items for the kits for weeks.

Ken is our latest new member!

 

Welcome to our newest member, Ken Rury. His sponsor is Pat Osler. Ken has lived in Poulsbo for 27 years and is transitioning from the corporate world to real estate agent. Ken founded Kitsap Cares on Facebook. It supports area charities!

The state of the Poulsbo Lions Club

Our Poulsbo Lions Club year starts July 1, which means we hit the 6-month mark on January 1. President Dennis Peters gave the following highlights in a State of Poulsbo Lions report:

• We've completed 30 projects with 186 members participating.
• We've had three fund-raising projects with 94 members participating.

Of course we have many projects coming up over the next six months, including assembling baggies of travel-sized toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, comb, toothbrush, etc. for Project Connect (distributed through Fishline Food Bank) on January 22, and a FREE community open swim at the North Kitsap Pool Saturday, February 28, from 12-2 p.m. (tell your friends!).

UPCOMING EVENTS:

April - Hooked on Fish fishing for kids.
May 1-2: Poulsbo Lions and Leo club students will be taking donations at area stores for White Cane Days for sight.
May 16-17: Our annual All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast at the NK High Commons during Viking Fest.
