Stark receives membership growth pin from LCI

Saying goodbye to Lloyd

 It is with great sadness that Lloyd D. Brown passed away Sept. 5 at the Hospice of Kitsap County Care Center in Bremerton at the age of 90. He was born on April 10, 1924. Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend the memorial service on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 11 a.m. at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church on Bainbridge Island.

Chapman earns blue vest

Recognizing our flag program

 

Many thanks to the handful of Poulsbo Lions who set up and took down the flags for Labor Day. They're always spectacular! The next set-up is September 11.

 

A group of dedicated Lions set up and take down the flags on numerous holidays in downtown Poulsbo, as well as along Viking Avenue. They really make our city shine!

Health screening van a hit at Touch a Truck event

Our club had the Lions health screening unit at Poulsbo Village Shopping Center August 23, and screened eyes, ears, took blood pressures and blood sugar readings. Above, Lions JanetMarie Valiga with Leo the Lion (Joe) and Pauline Ostheller.

 

Every year, kids and their families flock to the Poulsbo Village Shopping Center to sit in trucks, climb into a bus and on other equipment, honk horns and sit in police cars and ambulances.

Putting on a picnic at Camp Leo

 A handful of vehicles filled with Poulsbo Lions journeyed more than a couple of hours toward Mt. Rainier to put on a picnic for Camp Leo middle schoolers and their families Friday, August 1 at Buck Creek Recreational Area.

 

 

Here's a view of the camp as you walk up from the parking area.

 

 

The camp offers everything from a zip line and archery, to arts and crafts and a swimming pool, to hiking paths and more for diabetic kids from elementary school to high school.

 

 

The entire back of Lion Chuck Weaver's van was filled with chips, hot dog buns, hot dogs, condiments and the cooking elements. Another vehicle filled with Lions came up with the watermelons, and yet another vehicle came up with the salad fixings. The fourth Lions' vehicle was simply filled with warm bodies.

 

 

Lion Chuck set up a cooking element with two huge metal pots of boiling water for the huge Costco hot dogs. We also had tofu dogs as a vegetarian option, along with gluten-free buns.

 

 

As Chuck (background) cooked the hot dogs, Terry Blais (taking the photo) would put them in the buns and wrap them in foil. Larry Linn not only kept the hot dogs and buns coming, he also packed the hot dogs in coolers and boxes and moved them to the serving table.

Joyce, Sherri and Pauline Ostheller prepped the salad and chips tables. Salads and veggies were popular with everyone.

There were 89 middle school campers and their families, plus staff members, for a total of around 200 people served. 



 

 

Campers and their families, as well as staff members, grabbed their food and plopped down on the grass to eat, or just stood around talking with food in hand. Lion Dick Risley is on the far right.

Once past the food tables, everyone could put everything from ketchup and mustard, to relish and onions on their hot dogs. The camp provided water and Crystal Light as refreshments.

NK Leo of the Year has perfect attendance too

Congrats to Darby Lowney, who was the president of the North Kitsap High Leo Club last year and this year. Darby earned the Leo of the Year award (her name will be engraved on the plaque Lion Karl is holding), as well as a 100% attendance certificate. She also helps out at Camp Leo each summer - next year, she'll be a staff member!

Calendar sales begin now!

 

It's time to start selling our annual Poulsbo Lions calendars! For only $6 per calendar, they're a bargain. There's room to write on each day, and you'll never forget your anniversary or family member's birthday because they're printed on the calendar! In addition, some of our advertisers offer FREE goodies or discounts the week of your birthday and anniversary.

 

Our goal this year is for every new Lion to sell at least 5 calendars. The entire $6 collected for each calendar goes back into the North Kitsap community. Of course, as a Lion you'll want to sell 20 calendars so you'll receive a FREE steak dinner with all the fixin's in October.

Evening Pride prepares hot dogs for Relay for Life

As the Relay for Life in Poulsbo began July 11 at the North Kitsap High School track, the Poulsbo Lions Evening Pride Branch prepared hot dogs for the participants.

Homeowner gets new decking installed with winning bid

 

One Poulsbo homeowner got a terrific deal when she bid on and won a Lions work party at our first Fall Fling Dinner & Auction last September. She asked for the Lions to put on new decking for her. Above, Lion Pat Osler sets the first of 1,500 screws yesterday.

New Stenstrom in the club



 Lion Joe Stenstrom invited his mom, Jackie, into our club. Jackie was officially inducted at Thursday's noon meeting. Welcome Jackie!



Does our new zone zone chairman look familiar?

 



Though he just finished a year as Poulsbo Noon Lions president, Pat Burch stepped up for the zone chairman position for 2014-2015.

Zone meetings - now called District Governor's Advisory meetings - are quarterly, so attendance from our club will be expected to support Burch. It's a dinner meeting, and a good opportunity to meet other Lions in the zone.

Out with the old, and in with the new

 

Every year in June, there is mostly fun - but part ceremony - as awards are handed out for the previous year and new officers are installed. This year, on June 26, the venue was the Kiana Lodge, which was bursting with colorful hanging baskets of flowers, and has a wonderful view of the water. Dinner was a buffet featuring salmon and flank steak.

Roger Sherrard had fun roasting Jay Dahlquist as he presented Jay with a Melvin Jones Fellowship. Also earning the MJ Fellowship was Lion Doug Mong, who was not feeling well this evening. Larry Linn made that presentation, and will give the award to Doug at the next meeting Doug attends.

 

 

President Pat Burch gave Joe Stenstrom the Martin Anderson Memorial Lion of the Year Award, with Dale Anderson looking on. Joe is always there to help with whatever project or event is in the works.

 

Terry Blais was named Lion of the Quarter for the fourth quarter.

 

JanetMarie Valiga earned the Rookie of the Year award for going out of her way to participate in Lions projects, even if it meant rescheduling her personal calendar.

 

Jim Schoettler was name Invisible Lion of the Year for all of the work he does behind the scenes that nobody else sees, such as picking up eyeglasses.

 

 

Pauline Ostheller received the Spirit Award for her cheerful demeanor and willingness to lend a hand wherever needed.

 

 



The first annual Gordon Smith Fellowship was presented by Burch for Roger Sherrard for his international work with the Albanian courts. The award is made possible from Multiple District 19 for the club's birthday donations to C.A.R.E.
