Busy May for Poulsbo Lions
May started out with White Canes, which provides money for vision care in our community. Thirty club members spent 99 hours collecting more than $3,000 in donations - an almost exact match to what was collected last year.
During Viking Fest the third weekend in May, our club held its annual Pancake Breakfast - this time at North Kitsap High School - which was successful. A total of 55 more breakfasts were served this year than last year. Lions made a couple of runs for more eggs. A total of 38 Lions spend 275 hours preparing and serving breakfast. Thirty-five hours were spent setting up and cleaning, and 75 hours were spent publicizing the event and repainting directional signs.
The scholarship committee met May 29 and chose six recipients of the pancake breakfast proceeds, plus one to receive the Frank Raab Scholarship to give away a total of $6,500 in scholarships. One scholarship is $500, and goes to a repeat scholar from last year; one $750 scholarship goes to a Kingston High School LEO (the J.C. Smith Scholarship), three $750 and two $1,500 scholarships also go to KHS students.
Also during Viking Fest was our first-ever Strawberry Shortcake booth at Anderson Parkway (in the middle of the Viking Fest action). Lion Tom made the booth, and Lion Ginger (who came up with the idea for the booth) kept it well-stocked. A total of $662 was raised. Our club will have a Strawberry Shortcake booth at Poulsbo's 3rd of July festivities, as well.
