Wanted: Place to hold annual Pancake Breakfast!

The Poulsbo Lions Club is in need of a place to hold its annual Pancake Breakfast.
Last year, the club held it in the parking garage under the new City Hall. In the years prior to that, it was held in the Armory - now a parking lot itself.

The breakfast is held the weekend of Poulsbo's May Viking Fest. It features pancakes (of course), sausage, eggs, coffee and orange juice. Proceeds from the breakfast go to local students in the form of scholarships.

Calendar sales underway

If you want your family's names and anniversaries on the Poulsbo Lions calendar for 2012, you need to contact a Lion member now. Each calendar is only $6, with 100 percent of the proceeds going back into the North Kitsap community.

Ad space is also available for a nominal amount.

Calendars need to be paid for by September 15, 2011, and given to Lion Larry Linn.

Every Poulsbo Lion selling 20 calendars or more gets a free steak dinner in October.

September 30 beer tasting at mall

If you enjoy beer, you won't want to miss tasting some microbrews at Hale's Ales and help Silverdale Sunrise Lions make some money at the same time.

The beer tasting takes place at 6 p.m. September 30 at the Kitsap Mall. For $25 per person, six brews will be selected from Hale's Brewery for your tasty consideration, and a food buffet is included.

Project New Hope

Lion Dick Risley of Evening Pride Branch is heading the Kitsap County branch of Project New Hope.

The project will soon become district-wide. It provides a retreat setting for returning military and their families, to help them as they return stateside after being in a conflict zone.

A fund-raising event will take place at the Clearwater Casino at a date to be announced. If you'd like to help with the project, please contact Lion Dick.

Poulsbo Lions finish Fish Park boardwalk phase

After many Saturdays, Poulsbo Lions Club members finished the latest Fish Park boardwalk project, though it wasn't without drama.

A large tree had been uprooted and had fallen close to the almost completed viewing platform. Lion Scott showed up with a chainsaw, but handed it to Lion Garvin, who straddled the trunk and began lopping off branches at top speed.

Lots of fun at annual picnic

Summer temps arrived just in time for the Poulsbo Lions' annual picnic at Nelson Park.

Lions cooked hamburgers, kielbasa, and corn on the cob. Everyone brought something to share with their fellow Lions and family members. It's a wonderful, relaxed atmosphere where everyone gets the opportunity to get to know each other a little better.

Lions Dottie presented past King Lion Mike Regis with a scrapbook commemorating his year as president. Lion Lynnea did the same for immediate past president Ryan Smart.

Lion Irv had four generations of the Spellman family at the picnic. And Lion Ginger brought a pinata for the kids to break.

Poulsbo horse comes in a winner

Polish Dollar came in first in the Poulsbo Noon Lions Club Purse at Emerald Downs on July 28. The purse was $6,200.

The horse is owned by a woman (Sharon Radke), trained by a woman (Debbie Van Horne), and ridden by a woman (Deborah Hoonan-Trujillo). Polish Dollar had a time of 0:56.4 in 5 furlongs.

Lion Doug Mong organized the outing for the club. Some came home with empty pockets, while others had a bit more than they'd left with. Lion Sandi had a chance to win $500, but it wasn't to be.

The 94th Lions Clubs International (LCI) Convention was held in Seattle for the first time ever on July 4-8. Our Poulsbo Lions Club was in charge of security. Many Lions were in Seattle to view the huge parade too.

Viking Fest pancake breakfast at new city hall a success!

After the Armory was flattened earlier this year, our club scrambled to find a new location downtown for the annual Viking Fest pancake breakfast. We ended up in the parking garage under the new city hall building, thanks in part to Mayor Becky Erickson.

Thousands of pancakes were flipped and served, along with sausage and eggs, making the breakfast a big success and raising thousands of dollars for high school scholarships.

Poulsbo Lion Dan is heading up the LEO club at Poulsbo Middle School. The kids meet every Thursday after school. The Poulsbo Lions provided the t-shirts for this promising group.

The PMS LEOS are in the process of collecting warm clothing for those less fortunate in the community through Thanksgiving. The kids are looking for coats, jackets, sweaters, gloves, mittens, socks, blankets, and anything else warm for children and adults. Please contact a Poulsbo Lion if you have something to donate.

Steak Night in October is always a great reward for a job well done selling our annual birthday calendars. This time around, under the leadership of Lion Larry, the Poulsbo Lions will net a little more than $2,500, and the calendars will be available this month.

Federal Way Lions are hosting their first-ever golf tournament on Friday, Sept. 24, at the North Shore Golf Course in Tacoma.

The cost is $85, which includes 18 holes, range balls, a $10 golf cart credit, a cheeseburger buffet dinner. In addition, there will be loads of terrific prizes you'll have a chance to win when you purchase raffle tickets.

Texas Hold'em Tourney to raise money for Zone C4

Poulsbo Lions filled Nelson Park on Aug. 19. Lion Beth chaired the social committee, out-doing herself with flowers on the tables and water balloons.

Lion Dick provided ears of corn. The club provided hot dogs and hamburgers, which were grilled to perfection by Lions Dennis and Chuck. Other members brought beans, salads and desserts.

After eating, Lion Manny presented his son - Lion John - with a 25-year chevron. Our club currently has several multi-generation family members.

Lion Manny was voted in as a Lifetime Member of the Poulsbo Noon Lions Club, and was gifted with a book of photos of club members and Lions' activities. Lion Manny joined the club in 1963 and has been involved all of those years. He was responsible for donating the vending machines that provided activity income for many years. He claims to be the Tail Twister who made the most money in fines. There are many high-spirited stories about Lion Manny.

The Best Soda Bread ever March 13

The Poulsbo Lions are hosting a St. Patrick's Day dinner Saturday, March 13, at the Warren G. Harding Masonic Lodge.

The lodge is located on the corner of 3rd Avenue and Front Street. The dinner will take place upstairs from 4:30-7:30 p.m.

A genuine Irish Lion will bake Irish soda bread. Other menu items include corned beef and cabbage (of course).

Tickets are $15 ($8 for children under 10), and may be pre-ordered from a Poulsbo Lion, or purchased at the door, or you may get tickets at Dahlquist's Fine Jewelry, Bayside Engravers and Liberty Bay Auto.

The goal is 250 dinners.

The EPB Scholarship Committee will also be selling gift cards for The Loft for $25 each, receiving a portion of the sales.

Lions help in Haiti

Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) is working non-stop with Lions in Haiti to support "Lions Hope for Haiti."

Lions Hope for Haiti has mobilized more than US$350,000 to date. Lions around the world are responding generously and quickly to the LCIF designated fund for this disaster.

Lions around the world are also assisting:

Lions in neighboring Caribbean countries are sending cargo containeres of requested supplies through connections with transportation companies.
Lions in Sweden are sending large tents through the Swedish government to provide housing for those who are now homeless as well as relief workers, as they did for the China earthquake.
Lions from District A-9, Ontario, Canada, were in the area when the earthquake hit, helping to establish a clean water system for an orphanage, and responded by establishing a make-shift medical clinic, treating 600 people.
Lions are contributing generously, some examples include: US$86,000 pledged from Lions in Norway; US$20,000 from Lions in China; US$14,000 from District 105-I, England.

Like other previous disasters, LCIF is not only commited to meeting the immediate needs of the people, but will be working through the Lions in the region to provide relief for years to come. After other relief organizations have moved out of the area, Lions will still be on the ground, overseeing long-term reconstruction projects. Similar to previous disasters, Lions will be discussing the possibility of rebuilding homes and hospitals, redeveloping the eye care delivery system, providing human resource support, and assisting the disabled, including those disabled as a result of this disaster.

If you haven't already done so, consider making a donation to LCIF to support this diaster. One hundred percent of every donation will go directly to Haiti relief. Administrative cost are paid by interest earned on investments. LCIF just recently received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, the highest rating possible from the independent charity evaluator.

Poulsbo Lions provide bikes for quintuplets

Lion Larry has been instrumental in getting Poulsbo Lions together to refurbish bicycles for a local family that includes five 3-year-olds.

The kids received the new-looking bikes for Christmas.

Spaghetti feed successful raising funds

Our club planned a hasty Spaghetti Feed in November to raise funds for a former veteran, Pat Momany, to travel to Germany to cook barbecued food for our troops there. Poulsbo President Mike passes a banner to Pat, along with Lion Karen.

In addition, Lions Dotty and Ginger (along with little Nicolette) were working to sell extra Lions Cookbooks that's been a new fund-raiser for our club.

Relief for Samoa

LCIF is working with local Lions to respond to massive tsunami that hit Samoa around dawn on September 29. The tsunami was triggered by a powerful earthquake, measuring between 8.0 and 8.3. As of October 2, more than 168 people are dead and many more are missing in Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga. The U.S. $10,000 emergency grant has been awarded for New Zealand, 202-K, as American Samoa and Samoa are allocated in that district. Lions from New Zealand are distributing the funds to the areas impacted.

Everyone around the world can help by donating to the designated account for this specific disaster.

The Evening Pride Branch of our lions club held an early vision exam clinic during the Touch-a-Truck event August 15.

The event took place at Poulsbo Village Shopping Center.

A Basque guest

Teen-ager Ane Lopez from "Basque" northern Spain (near France) has been the guest of Lion Rick and his family this summer. She's here to experience American and perfect her English. She speaks Basque, French, English, and Spanish.

A group called Summer in America helps with the reservations and arrangements, but the students (ages 15-18) pay their own way.

Lion Rick and his family take care of Ane's expenses while she lives with his family.

This is an outreach program from six churches in Kitsap County, as well as three in Poulsbo.

Our club is cooking up a great weekend of breakfast May 16 and 17 during the Viking Fest celebration.

The breakfast will be held in the Armory on Jensen Street in downtown Poulsbo. In addition to pancakes, there are eggs and sausage, coffee, milk, and orange juice.

All funds raised go for high school scholarships, so bring your extended family and friends.

Also, the LEOS will be riding a float in the parade, handing out candy, so look for these great kids as well.

Sharing White Cane Days photos

White Cane donations totaled $3,958.00 for the May 1-2 weekend. LEOS will be trying to get more donations at Viking Fest.

NKHS Leos bring in $111 with car wash

And Les Schwab Tire Center matched the $111 in funds raised for a grand total of $222.

April 25 was a busy day for fishing and for the NKHS Leo Club, which held a car wash at Les Schwab.

Hooked on Fish winner gets tackle box

A girl named Allisa won the first hour of Hooked on Fish with a 14-inch fish; unfortunately, there's no photo.

This photo, however, is of Connor, age 8, and his brother Teagan, age 4. Connor won a nice tackle box with a 13 1/4-inch fish. His brother netted an 11-inch trout.

Hooked on Fish celebrates 25 years

Our Hooked on Fish event saw 300 kids coming out to fish for trout. It also netted $70 in donations.

We co-sponsored this event with the NKHS Future Farmers of America, shown in the second photo with some KHS FFA students.

The Poulsbo Noon Lions Club will host its 41st annual Viking Fest Breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, May 16-17, 7 am – 1 pm at the Poulsbo Armory on Jensen Way.

The breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, eggs, milk, juice, cocoa, tea and coffee. The cost of the breakfast is $7.00 for adults and $5.00 for children under 10. Purchase tickets at the door.

According to Lion Michael, breakfast co-chair, “Last year we raised over $12,000 from this event and it all goes to scholarships for North Kitsap and Kingston High School seniors, which are awarded in June.”

Lions on the prowl May 1 and 2 for White Canes

Members of the Poulsbo Noon Lions Club will take to North Kitsap streets on Friday and Saturday, May 1-2, to raise funds as part of the annual White Cane Days.

All donations from the community will go to the Northwest Lions Foundation for Sight and Hearing in Seattle, where 2,500 corneas were transplanted last year. In addition, the Foundation helps low-income families pay for sight-related surgeries and equipment.
According to Linda and Dottie, project co-chairs, “We raised around $5,000 last year and hope to meet or exceed that goal. Regionally, 95 percent of the Lions clubs in the states of Washington and northern Idaho will be out in force on May 1-2. With so many good causes needing help in North Kitsap, any donation, no matter how large or small, is greatly appreciated. You are truly helping Lions make a difference in our community.”

Hooked on Fish Derby coming up April 25

On Saturday, April 25, the Poulsbo Noon Lions Club and North Kitsap Future Farmers of America will host a Hooked on Fish Derby for children 11 and under, 7 am – 1 pm at the horticulture pond behind Poulsbo Junior High.

The event is free and bait is provided. Fishing poles are available on a first-come-first-served basis, so if children have poles, please bring them along.

The pond will be stocked with about 500 rainbow trout. Prizes will be awarded for the largest fish in each age category. Parents are encouraged to help, but not fish.

This is a fun-filled family activity that can help children develop a lifelong passion for fishing. Complimentary fish cleaning will be provided by NKFFA.

Stevenson quints celebrate skating birthday

On March 29, the Stevensons celebrated their quints' 3rd birthdays at Skateland in Bremerton. Their actual birthday is March 30.

Lions Larry and Hiromi, along with Nicoleta, attended the bash for the quints - Scarlett, Aniston, Cami, Weston, and Belle.

It was a festive affair with lots of kids and lots of action everywhere, all the time! All of the kids wore skates. Their abilities varied from pretty good to "don't let go!"

Older sister Lilly, age 5, is a good skater who apparently has inherited some of her dad's skating abilities. He was a member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic team on the roller speed-skating demo, which was a demonstration sport at that Olympics. The kids' grandfather is co-owner of Skateland.

More trees for Fish Park

A group of 23 people, including five North Kitsap High Leos and Lion Lynnea, showed up March 21.

Hood Canal Nursery donated the trees, which included Western Red Cedar, Western White Pine and Western Hemlock. A total of 140 trees got planted.

St. Patrick's dinner a success story

What better way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day than with corned beef and cabbage and genuine Irish soda bread?

Here are a couple of photos from the Poulsbo Lions Club's First Annual St. Patrick's Dinner Celebration March 14.

Our club put in approximately 130 hours of labor for this project and raised more than $2,000 for Lions projects in the community.

We also had four Leos from North Kitsap High and five from Kingston High serving dinners.

Lion Joyce (in green, of course) was the head chef. In the middle is LEO Taylor from Kingston Middle School, with Lion Tom adding cabbage to plates (pictured on the right).

Below, Lions June and Chuck fill up plates with potatoes and carrots, and the Risley clan eagerly awaits their food.

O Lutefisk singers net second place

Here's a report on Spring Conference from King Lion Karl:

"Even though Poulsbo came through with a brilliant effort, we were once more judged to be a 2nd-place club. Our Poulsbo singers took 2nd place in the musical comedy section.

"The new vice district governor is Dan Comsia of Lakewood First.

"I am happy to report that Poulsbo took 1st place in the achievement speech about our Fish Park boardwalk and the camaraderie of our club. Poulsbo also receive the 1st-place award for club scrapbook. Our club newsletter won a 4th-place ribbon.

"A big thank you to all the Poulsbo Lions that came down to sing and came Saturday (March 7) for the nominating and voting."

Lion Larry (blue, flowered shirt) was the honored recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship in 2006. Standing with him in the top photo are other Melvin Jones recipients (from left to right: Lions Jim, Herb, Manny and Dick).

The Melvin Jones Fellowship is recognition of a commitment to humanitarian work. It is not an award in the tradition of Lions awards presented for specific accomplishments.

The fellowship is an honor given to individuals who contribute the equivalent of US$1,000 to LCIF, and persons for whom such donations are made by others.

The fellowship is the foundation's highest honor and represents humanitarian qualities such as generosity, compassion, and concern for the less fortunate.

Melvin Jones Fellows receive a lapel pin and a personalized wall plaque in honor of their commitment to helping others.

The fellowship was created in 1973, and is named for the founder of Lions Clubs International, Melvin Jones.

"Share the Love" nets approximately $1,500

Lion Neil J. boosted the club's coffers with his sweet See's candy "Share the Love" fund-raiser, to the tune of approximately $1,500.

The Lions shared more See's candy, lunch and fellowship at the Valentine's gathering Feb. 12 in the social hall at First Lutheran Church.

LEO Club hosts car wash and blood drive

The LEOs have a car wash this Saturday, Feb. 7, at Liberty Tax on Viking Way. Please plan to come by between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. to get your car washed - and tell your friends!

The LEOs are sponsoring a blood drive on Friday, February 13, from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the North Kitsap High School in the small gym.
